| Target Function | Stem Cell Factor (SCF) plays an important role acting on progenitor cells in hematopoiesis, germ cell development, and melanogenesis. SCF not only has a role in expansion and differentiation of stem cells but is an important factor in preventing apoptosis and promoting self-renewal and survival of stem cells. The receptor for SCF is c-KIT (CD117). c-Kit expression is lost during differentiation of hematopoietic cells, with the exception of mast cells. SCF induces mast cell proliferation and histamine release. |
| Tissue Specificity | SCF expression has been reported in skin (particularly in basal layer of the epidermis), stomach, intestines, testes, ovaries, brain, thymus and lymph nodes. |
| Cellular Localization | Membrane-bound and cleaved soluble protein forms |
| Involvement In Disease | Dysregulation of SCF has been implicated in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), leukemia, melanomas, breast cancer, aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, mastocytosis, pigmentation disorders (piebaldism and Waardenburg syndrome), gonadal dysgenesis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and allergic asthma. |
