Background | SUMO1 (also known as UBL1) is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family which functions in a manner similar to ubiquitin. SUMO1 is bound to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system and it is involved in a variety of cellular processes, such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability (1). SUMO1 may be involved in the repair of TOP1-mediated DNA damage (2). The sumoylation pathway plays a significant role in mammalian DNA damage response. |
