| Target Function | Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a crucial role in the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of hematopoietic stem cells and myeloid progenitor cells. In particular, IL-3 regulates the development of basophils, dendritic cells, eosinophils, erythrocytes, macrophages, mast cells, megakaryocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils. IL-3 is produced by a variety of cells, including activated T cells, B cells, mast cells, and vascular endothelial cells. Signaling takes place through binding to IL-3R alpha (CD123) that heterodimerizes with the common beta chain (CD131). |
| Tissue Specificity | IL-3 expression has been identified in bone marrow stromal cells and vascular endothelial tissue. |
| Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
| Involvement In Disease | Dysregulation of IL-3 is associated with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), aplastic anemia, multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). |
