| Target Function | Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is a protein with predominant roles in the innate and adaptive immune response. It is secreted by Th1 cells, cytotoxic T cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, mucosal epithelial cells and NK cells. IFN-gamma promotes the differentiation of T cells into Th1 cells. Th1 cells produce IFN-gamma themselves, creating a positive feedback loop that amplifies the immune response. In addition, IFN-gamma upregulates monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells while increasing MHC class I and II expression. B Cell immunoglobulin class switching is also influenced by IFN-gamma. IFN-gamma RI (CD119/IFNGR1) is the ligand-binding subunit that heterodimerizes with the IFN-gamma RII (IFNGR2). |
| Tissue Specificity | IFN-gamma expression has been identified in vascular endothelial cells, respiratory and gastrointestinal epithelial cells. |
| Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
| Involvement In Disease | Dysregulation of IFN-gamma is associated with autoimmune disorders (multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)), allergic asthma, atherosclerosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). |
