Host Species | Human |
Accession | P01133 |
Synonym | Urogastrone, EGF, Recombinant Human Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). |
Background | Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a small mitogenic protein that is thought to be involved in mechanisms such as normal cell growth, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, oncogenesis and wound healing. EGF shares strong sequential and functional homology with the type-alpha transforming growth factor, which is a competitor for EGF receptor sites. EGF signals through a receptor known as c-erbB, which is a class I tyrosine kinase receptor. The EGF receptor is expressed in almost all types of tissues with the exception of the parietal endoderm, mature skeletal muscles and hematopoietic tissue. Recombinant Human EGF is a globular protein that displays the EGF-like domain; characterized by three intra-molecular disulfide bonds that are formed by six similarly spaced conserved cysteine residues. Mature human EGF shares 70% amino acid sequence identity with its counterparts from mouse and rat. |
