| Target Function | LIF (Leukemia Inhibitory Factor) is a protein that plays multiple roles across regulation of stem cell differentiation, immune response, reproductive function and neuroprotection. LIF is typically associated with the maintenance of pluripotency in embryonic stem cells in cell culture. LIF production by CD4 T cells and Regulatory (Treg) Cells have been shown to suppress Th17 differentiation. Likewise, LIF expressed by tumors have an immunosuppressive effect. In uterine tissues, LIF facilitates embryo attachment to endometrial tissue. LIF downregulates inflammation and promotes the neuroprotective response during injury of neurons, thereby limiting neurodegeneration. LIF signaling occurs by binding to LIF Receptor (LIFR/CD118) heterodimerized to gp130 (CD130). |
